Markers of Relevance

This collection draws from the aging of physical surroundings and the traces left through interaction. By elevating signs of wear, stains, and deformation to markers of relevance, I seek to uncover a dialogue between maker, garment, and wearer. Textiles become recordings of unconscious proceedings—silent witnesses absorbing presence. Their gradual mutability reflects our own evanescence, functioning as a leitmotif for introspection.
However, garments do not only take shape, they also impose it by structuring posture and gesture. Their material vulnerability carries the imprint of lived experience and therefor resists obsolescence. By considering garments as mnemonic devices, I aim to explore the physiological, psychological, and emotional impact of clothing.

My project follows three research trajectories with one goal: collecting traces. The first path, material. Textured surfaces are more susceptible than smooth ones. I manipulated my textiles surface, to better catch dirt. The second path is print. When placed on the floor, my textile picks up the textures beneath it, prompting me to layer lace, mesh, and pattern pieces underneath it to control this process. The final path, deformation. As Garments both take on form and impose it, I designed and constructed my garments to visualise both processes by pattern drafting, draping and extracting patterns from existing shapes.
