interview

After graduating in 2010 from the Amsterdam Fashion Insitute , the Dutch designer Floor Kolen gained a lot of media attention, showing her collection at fashion weeks in Amsterdam, London and Shanghai.

The Amsterdam based denim brand G-Star RAW proposed Kolen a design position in their New York fashion week collection team. Within few years time she grew to become designer of their premium line, where she gained experience applying her creativity to a commercial product.

Mean while her enthusiasm for innovation and craftsmanship kept expanding. She took evening classes in hat making and started building motorbikes in her fathers workshop, which rapidly became one of her biggest passions and a new source of inspiration.

The interest in working with other materials like felt, leather and metal, motivated her to move to Paris in 2014 to obtain her masters degree in accessories design at the prestigious Institut Français de la Mode. After doing projects with Dior, Delvaux and LVMH, she graduated with distinction and has been working as a designer maroquinerie for Balenciaga and Lancel.

The balance between a life in the avant-garde Paris fashion scene mixed with the freedom of the down to earth motorbike world describe her creative universe very well, one where functionality, technique, and aesthetics meet.
