The Darker Side of Black

My collection is rooted in the past and looking to a future of common cause and common connection beyond the imposed definitions we live with.

On a personal level, this resonates with my own heritage that covers Guyana, the UK, Holland and an intergenerational involvement with East Africa.

My main inspiration for the collection is Jab Jab. This is a carnival tradition in the Caribbean island of Grenada, where they cover themselves in black motor oil. They do this to show recognition of hardships endured by slaves during the island’s colonial past, and as a celebration of the freedoms of today.
